Ricochet is hiring a research project manager!
Ricochet Media, a national non-profit media outlet, is seeking a project manager to help oversee a study of police misconduct.
The project’s goal is to create a database of incidents of misconduct and consequences for the officers involved, which will then be featured in reporting produced by the outlet and shared with other outlets, researchers and the public.
This project is funded through a Michener-Deacon fellowship, with additional support from the Inspirit Foundation.
This is a unique opportunity to help lead one of the most in-depth studies of police misconduct ever conducted in Canada.
Ricochet Media is a national media outlet with a mandate to serve the public interest. Founded in 2014, Ricochet produces original reporting, analysis and commentary on current events and upholds progressive editorial positions and principles that reflect the audience we serve.
Ricochet has won six national awards for investigative journalism over the past three years. We produce context-rich, in-depth journalism and we take our time to get it right.
The research coordinator will be responsible for overall management of the research project. They will work with Ricochet’s team of editors, academic partners and research assistants to compile information from a wide variety of sources in order to produce comprehensive national results that can be broken down by province and city.
- Finalize research plan, in coordination with our editors
- Identify and hire contract researchers to support the project
- Work with academic partners to integrate their expertise
- Supervise contract researchers working remotely
- Manage the collection and synthesis of data
- Oversee the creation of this major database, ensuring it is segmentable and searchable
- Work with editors and journalists to support reporting of findings
- Ensure the database is easily accessible and searchable, to support subsequent use
- Such other duties as may be required to ensure the timely completion of the project
This a full-time, six-month contract position with possibility of extension.
$4,800 per month / $28,800 over six months.
- Demonstrated experience conducting or working on large-scale research projects.
- Strong knowledge of data analysis, statistics and relevant digital tools.
- Experience using R or Python to do statistical analysis work (ideally including data visualizations).
- BA in sociology, political science or another relevant field of social studies.
- Academic background in research methods or comparable professional experience.
- Experience managing projects and leading teams.
- Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, in a digital office environment.
- Familiarity with Canadian academic practices and standards.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
- Familiarity with policing issues in Canada, and a basic understanding of national, provincial and municipal police forces and their respective jurisdictions.
- Familiarity with Slack, Google Docs/Sheets and other online collaboration tools.
