Find Out If Your MP Is A Landlord Or Invested In Real Estate

Do you live in Canada? Have you been impacted by pro-landlord policies, especially throughout this pandemic? Are you curious to know if your member of parliament is a landlord or invested in real estate in some way?

If so, you’re in the right place.

MPs are required to complete public disclosure reports that contain, in part, property they own, sources of income and investments. These reports tell us if our elected representatives, and/or their spouses/dependents, are landlords/invested in real estate. The federal government makes these disclosures accessible through an online tool at the website of the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner.

The data presented in this article is current as of August 23. At that point, 336 of 338 MPs’ disclosures were available online. The two MPs whose disclosures were not yet available online were Karina Gould and Fraser Tolmie, so they’ve been excluded from the data.

I’ve gone through all this data and identified which political representatives (and/or their spouses or dependents) fit into one or more of the following categories: 1) disclose residential rental property that they earn an income from; 2) disclose residential rental property without disclosing any income; 3) disclose non-residential property (vacant lots, farmland, etc.); 4) disclose some sort of other involvement in real estate (for example as a real estate agent, or with investments in real estate investment trusts.)

These MPs, along with their riding, province and political affiliation, have been listed in the chart below. Each of these MPs is also categorized based upon which of the four options above they best fit into. Some fit into multiple categories, and in that case they are listed according to the earliest category option as noted above. For example, someone that owns rental property and earns income from it, but also has invested in REITs, would be listed as category one in the chart.

After the chart, I’ve included a map of all 338 ridings in Canada with the ones that have elected an MP from the chart above coloured-in based on their party affiliation. Next, I’ve provided data analysis looking at breakdowns of MPs by party and province/territory. Following that, I’ve included a searchable list of each MP along with the portions of their disclosure relevant to the article. As previously mentioned, this data is accurate as of August 23. An MP’s situation may change after that point.

This is the second time I’ve conducted and published this sort of research. The first was published in March 2021, prior to the most recent federal election. Other than being updated to reflect the new election, this second edition has also expanded on the first in terms of what I’ve included based upon feedback I received (for example, adding the map, including a searchable list of MPs along with relevant portions of their disclosures and broadening the criteria for being included in the list).

Of the 336 MPs included in this analysis, 128 met the qualifications (38 per cent).
