We’re hiring a climate justice reporter

This is a crucial historical moment, and we are excited to add a dynamic individual to our team to help us cover the climate crisis and all the ways it intersects with other vital issues. Too often climate reporting focuses narrowly on emissions reductions targets and the ways that governments are (most often) failing to meet them. We want our climate justice reporter to dig deeper and help expand the notion of what climate reporting entails.

Here are some of the angles the reporter will cover:

  • In what ways does environmental racism play out in resource development, climate movements and climate debates in Canada?
  • How do Indigenous Peoples and communities understand climate issues, and how are they both resisting climate-wrecking industrial projects and leading in developing solutions for renewable energy?
  • How do issues of urban design and development — housing, transit, public space — intersect with climate change, and what are some examples of communities leading the way in this field?
  • What role is climate change already playing in human migration to Canada, and how should the country be preparing for a future with millions of climate refugees?
  • What exactly are “green jobs” and who are the most important voices advocating for expanding these types of employment? What are workers in oil and gas and other fossil fuel sectors feeling and saying about climate?

Ricochet Media is a digital publication covering news, politics and culture in Canada. We are expanding our operations this year, and this is a unique opportunity to be part of a growing team at an emerging, independent outlet.

  • Report and submit an average of 2-3 stories per week on climate justice and related topics
  • Take and submit photos to accompany stories, and shoot short, basic videos from time to time teasing your reporting
  • Maintain and send an engaging weekly newsletter on the topic of just recovery and climate justice
  • Attend weekly editorial meetings by phone or video conference, and work closely with our editorial team
  • Pitch story ideas as well as run with assigned stories
  • Occasionally assist with promotional campaigns to support Ricochet’s reporting on the just recovery and climate justice
  • Background in journalism, with a passion for storytelling, exposing injustice and solutions-oriented reporting
  • Demonstrated interest in climate and related issues
  • Excellent writing, research and interpersonal skills
  • Sound news judgment and reporting skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to collaborate and work as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of digital news and enthusiasm for independent media
  • Familiarity with basic climate science, environmental and social justice and related issues
  • Willingness to undertake occasional travel

Our office is mainly virtual, so this remote position can be filled by a candidate situated anywhere in Canada who is legally entitled to work in the country. The position is full-time, 35 hours per week, paid at $25/hour. The job can begin as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
